WALKIE TALKIES 4 KIDS "NEVER ALONE"

by Chat with Champs

Chiyo Padilla

Why:
Karen wants to make a difference and she's standing up to cancer by running the Holiday Half Marathon this December. She knows it will be hard and the biggest challenge she will have attempted in her 10 years of life. When things are tough and she feels defeated, she will think of the kids she is running on behalf of.

FACTS:

  •  46 kids are diagnosed with cancer each day, more children die from cancer than any other disease. Childhood cancer is not just one disease, it is made up of a dozen types and countless subtypes.
  • The cause of most childhood cancers are unknown and are not strongly linked to lifestyle or environmental risk factors, unlike many adult cancers. There is only 4% funding for pediatric cancer research. 2/3 of childhood cancer patients will have long lasting chronic conditions from treatment.
MY CHARITY:
Chat with Champs directly helps kids going through cancer treatments by connecting kids with other champs via walkie talkies. Chat with Champs is program that is currently at Rady's Children's Hospital and the San Diego Naval Hospital. An in-patient child can pick up a walkie talkie and chat with another child at any given time during their hospital stay, despite being in isolation or unable to leave their bedside. This brings a level of fun, allows kids to be social and make new friends.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Join the Fight Against Cancer! Help us bring a walkie talkie to every child that is hospitalized in the hematology/oncology Pediatric department. Together we can spread a little fun and joy in a time when these heroes feel isolated, alone and trapped.

Most kids will be hospitalized for 3-5 days while others will stay for 21 days or more. These little warriors are placed in isolation due to fevers or infections, some are left alone when both parents are forced to return to work. Our program allows in-patient kids to socialize with other kids at any given time of the day despite of isolation or unable to leave their bedside.
